If you have been reticent to attend your regular dental checkup at our dental office, your chances of suffering a cavity are increased. As time goes by, a cavity will inevitably grow.
Sometimes a cavity can be too large for Dr. Hauptman and Dr. Rowhani to viably repair it with a basic filling. For a tooth suffering from a cavity this large, they might need to fix the tooth with a dental crown.
This is a two-stage process that will replace the entire tooth enamel layer with another material. As a standard practice, most crowns are made from either gold, porcelain or base metals.
Your dentists will start the process by using a drill to remove the entire tooth enamel layer. This leaves behind a dentin pillar called an abutment that encases the healthy pulp and root of the tooth.
Your dentists will then take an impression of the area, which will be sent to our off-site dental lab where your final crown will be made. A temporary crown will then be secured over the abutment to protect it.
You will need to come back in for a second appointment when your final crown is ready. The temporary crown will be removed and a strong dental adhesive will be used to cement your new crown into place.
